Wasn't cardinal the ideal destiny for an authoritarian and solitary bilious man?
Because here is Alceste in the very comfortable situation of a man cut off from the world, but holding this world in his iron fist: in the 18th century, the power of a prelate is considerable. 20 years later, he invites himself to his former lover's house to find a pretty forty-year-old, who, far from the Court that she "betrayed" by marrying a bourgeois, seems perfectly happy with her four children.
But what did Mazarin's equal come to do with this ordinary mother? Save her! Because he says he has been haunted for months by a "terrifying" dream that he took for a message from heaven, and according to which Célimène is in mortal danger...
Convinced that he is God's ambassador to men, Alceste decides to confess this lost sheep, too happy to be honest. This "confession" by turns funny, moving and... erotic, will quickly turn into an oratorical joust between a Jansenist anchored in his time and a libertine ahead of her time, a figurehead, according to Alceste, of an 18th century that is fast approaching.
But from this conflict, only Love will emerge victorious, since 20 years later, Molière's lovers still love each other. And forever.
