Chapel of Sancta Maria de Olivo

This is one of the oldest buildings still standing in Beaulieu-sur-Mer. The chapel is mentioned as early as 1075, which means that it dates from the 11th century.

It was built on the ruins of a Gallo-Roman temple, next to which were 80 Palaeochristian tombs (battery car park) discovered in the 1930s and 40s. At the beginning of the 20th century, the town's development was accompanied by an increase in population. Despite the separation of church and state in 1905, the Catholic faith still played a dominant role in society at the time. The chapel was no longer large enough to accommodate all the believers, and the Church of the Sacred Heart was built next door. Today, the chapel has been desanctified and converted into a temporary exhibition space. Work is scheduled for 2025-2026.
