The role of an honorary consul is to assist Dutch citizens abroad at the embassy's request—in cases of emergency, hospitalization, disappearance, death, or the issuance of emergency travel documents—and to promote the Netherlands' economic interests by facilitating local contacts for businesses. Often visible in times of crisis, honorary consuls also play a key role on a daily basis, acting as a link between the embassy, the business community, and the Dutch community there.
