Conference
11 April 2025
Friday 11 April 2025 at 4 pm.
A woman across the seas: Virginie Hériot. Meeting with Yvan Gastaut.
A long-forgotten figure in maritime adventures, Virginie Hériot, gold medalist in sailing at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, became a reference in the sport even though her life was short. Born in 1890 into a wealthy family who loved sea cruises, she discovered the Mediterranean and decided to become a sailor. This would be achieved with a destiny as exceptional as it was tragic because it was at sea that she died, in 1932, the victim of a fainting spell on board her sailboat during a regatta in Arcachon. Also fond of literature, she left behind many travel journals and poems.
