In autumn 2025, the Musée National Marc Chagall will present its rich collection through a chrono-thematic display that illustrates the permanence and recurrence of the themes explored by the artist from his earliest years.

On the one hand, self-portraits, either alone or as a couple, play a major role in Chagall's work. The artist draws himself as a painter with a palette, in front of his easel or in his studio. To illustrate his happiness after his marriage to his wife Bella in 1915, the painter produced a large number of double portraits in which passion dominates. These portraits of couples embody a true evocation of the universal dimension of love.

The exhibition will also focus on circus and dance themes, partly inspired by the artist's childhood Hasidic Jewish celebrations. Chagall shows the acrobat as an allegory of the artist and the circus as a satirical metaphor for society, where fantasy and cruelty coexist.

Finally, the Bible occupies an essential place in Chagall's work. For over fifty years, Chagall continued to depict biblical episodes with a poetic and spiritual dimension, inspired by his desire to compose an allegorical message of universal peace. This autumn's show also aims to present, for the last time before their departure in 2026 for a major exhibition, the works of Chagall.
