Although works from earlier periods are often perceived as 'decorative' by the general public, at the time of their creation they were charged by the artist or the commissioner with delivering a number of messages.
The best known of these, concerning flowers, are related to the memento mori of Baroque vanities or to symbols of love and purity in religious painting.
However, the meaning of the flower and the work that shows it can refer, much more broadly, to an era, an event, the character traits of a person or the knowledge he or she possesses. A detailed iconographic approach will allow us to slip into the shoes of the 17th or 19th century viewer and grasp the meaning of the floral motifs, and through this, the function of the work in its original context.
From sumptuous painted bouquets to flowers hidden in the crevices of marble and Raoul Dufy's cubist experiments, the fireworks flowers in the Musée des Beaux-Arts will reveal all their secrets on this occasion.
