The Pic Charvet fort was part of Nice's 19th-century defensive system.
Its main mission is to control the crossroads of the Tinée and Var valleys, with a visibility of over 5,000 m. In 1892, it was used to watch over the railway line linking Nice to Saint-André-les-Alpes, and in 1912, the Tinée tramway line crossing the Var at the mouth of La Mescla. Its construction is associated with that of the Chiuse de Bauma Negra, a fort built into the cliff to prevent passage on the Tinée road. You can hike around the fort from the village of Tournefort.
