L’Artistique is back with the return of the Ferrero Donation Collection and invites Jean Mas for a temporary exhibition.
In 1986, Jean Ferrero offered Jean Mas an exhibition entitled "Cubage de l'École de Nice", to "cube" different artists from the École de Nice. During the following year, Jean Mas made 19 wooden cubes of 20x20x20 cm. The exhibition took place, with the publication of a booklet limited to one hundred copies by "Z'éditions" and as is often the case, when he is at the origin, Jean Ferrero decided to keep all these pieces until they were part of his Donation to the City of Nice in 2014.
This exhibition is thus a unique opportunity to rediscover these cubes, which have remained unpublished for almost 40 years and restored for the occasion thanks to the active participation of the artist.
"Ombres", from a series of works produced from 1990, complete the exhibition. After photographing shadows of people, plants or objects, he transposes and transfigures them by painting them in black and white. With the folding of horizontal planes to the vertical, Jean Mas transforms the space and disrupts the immediate perception of his images.
Jean Mas :
Jean Mas was born in Nice in 1946, he still lives and works there. Anchored, since 1973 in the artistic movement of Nice and the Fluxus movement, he is one of the last living artists of the School of Nice. Known especially for his Cages à mouche, essential vehicle of his expression, his princeps object, he has produced a prolific and original work where the Bubbles of Soap, the Cubes, the Few, the Versions, the FOR SALE or the Shadows follow one another. An artist of the signifier, he has also developed an entire individual mythology within the framework of an Art of Attitude - the "PerforMas" where he gives us an understanding of the equivocation, the paradox or even the ambiguity of meaning.
