From 06 to 07 April 2023
The choreographic duo Rosalba Torres Guerrero and Koen Augustijnen create Lamenta, a dance-theatre creation that freely delves into Greek traditions and weaves them into contemporary dance.
For the occasion, they bring together a group of nine contemporary Greek dancers.
Lamenta looks at the different states experienced when loss and separation occur. In all cultures, there have been rituals surrounding mourning, carried by song, music and dance, to collectively express and share emotional torments and create a path to freedom.
Torres Guerrero and Augustijnen were struck by the emotional and physical impact of the Epirus miroloi during their various trips to Greece. These sung laments, not only for funerals but also for departures into exile or marriages that will take a family member away, contrast with the lack of space for expressing loss and grief in contemporary Northern European society.
