from the banks of the Seine to Japan, from the Iles Saint Pierre et Miquelon to Syracuse, from San Francisco to the Norwegian fjords.
Olivier DESVAUX is a traditional oil painter. A 2006 graduate of the Ecole Supérieure Nationale des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and winner of numerous awards, he joined the select circle of Official Painters of the French Navy in 2018.
His studio is located on a bend of the Seine in Normandy, a landscape renowned for its exceptional light. Olivier Desvaux draws his inspiration from this daily spectacle, as well as from his countless travels, most often in the open air, with a particular attraction to natural light and waves, whether river, sea or the mirror of Lake Baikal.
Olivier DESVAUX's compositions are frequently structured by architectural edges, but also by a staging of emptiness that gives rhythm to the works and favours a masterly luminous atmosphere. The figures, when they appear, seem to float in the vibration of the light, giving them an enigmatic and silent dimension.
In the showcases, you'll find studies that gave rise to the large-format works produced in the studio. Interior scenes, portraits of close friends and family, details of landscapes and everyday scenes captured in travel diaries reveal another side to his work: scrutinising, intimate, scrutinising, intimate, often tender, always captivating.
‘Capturing reality, feeling, finding the inspiring light, the poetry of a place.
For me, it's an experience with living things, with the elements, which is always at the origin of my work in the studio.
