Place du Peyra

A former forum, the Place du Peyra was traditionally the place for the market and speakers. In Roman times, people gathered here to discuss the city's affairs.

The name Peyra comes from the ‘stone’ used during judicial executions.
The place was known as ‘locum peyratum’ (the stony place)

The Peyra gate in its current form only dates back to 1810. The fountain was refurbished in 1822 to replace one dating from 1578. The Fontaine Vieille, the Basse Fontaine and the Fontaine du Peyra were the only sources of drinking water until the Riou canal was built in 1886. Here, walkers can enjoy the famous waters of La Foux, which have the particularity of always flowing at the same temperature (13°C).
