Visit the bucolic Anelle Plateau (name derived from the Provençal "agnel" = "lamb").
Difficulty level: medium
Elevation gain +/- 630m - 4 hours
This former "summer" area is evidenced by the numerous alpine barns built of larch wood, locally called "butières," which were used to store precious fodder in preparation for the long winters.
The sunny Ublan countryside, still maintained and irrigated (vegetable gardens, orchards, meadows), precedes an arid sheep pastureland before the cool, upper larch forest of the Anelle shady slope.
The northern slope of the Anelle peak offers several glimpses of the border range, notably Mount Ténibre, the highest point in the Haute Tinée, which majestically dominates the entire valley from a height of 3,031 meters.
Itinerary :
From Jean Franco Middle School (1,161 m - b.77), take the white-and-red marked GR®5 (b.78) which climbs into the Ublan countryside between two box hedges. Cross the Ublan dirt track several times, which serves the scattered dwellings, and loop around (oratory, canal) to the Ublan West district (b.80).
By following the new path route created in 2007 to avoid the farm track, reach the lower part of the Anelle plateau (b.81); leave the GR5 to turn right, first onto the track, then onto a path lined with low stone walls. This takes you to the northern part of the Anelle woods (fir trees, spruce trees), the path crossing the steep slopes of the Buisse River towards the vast larch forest of Saint-Dalmas-le-Selvage. Further on, a forest track leads to the Col d’Anelle (1,739 m - b.70, 71) from where you return directly to Saint-Etienne-de-Tinée via the GR5 route (b.81, 80, 78, 77).
