Give a handsome, talented, and beloved young writer the opportunity to leave the provinces and make a name for himself in the capital. Give him the chance to discover the beautiful world and give him the confidence to succeed. But don't give him the usual codes.
This is how Lucien Chardon, or rather Lucien de Rubempré, plunges into the Parisian world, full of hope and ambition. Glitzy aristocracy, hard-working bohemians, the business world, the murderous press, the exuberant theater... Will these worlds grant a place to this newcomer? Each milieu has its rules, and Lucien is a player. Perhaps a little too much so.
Lucien will fall in love, have friends and enemies, experience betrayal and pretense. His talent and beauty will charm but will be envied. Thus, a machine of glory and fall is revealed in a 19th-century Paris with terribly contemporary tones...
