A new MAMAC
10 October 2022
MAMAC to undergo a complete renovation by 2025
The renovation of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MAMAC) in Nice is fully integrated into the project to extend the Promenade du Paillon to the Palais des Expositions
The objective? To make the MAMAC a cultural facility of reference with nearly 1400 works and to support Nice’s bid to become the European Capital of Culture in 2028!
The MAMAC in the heart of the urban park
Bringing conviviality, meeting international standards and the natural demands of the local public, breathing new life into this building (more than 30 years after its inauguration)…
The renovation of the MAMAC must address several key issues.
7 major axes for national and international influence
- The MAMAC will be integrated into this large urban park;
- Increase of all the areas accessible to the public (+400 m² of exhibition space);
- Creation of a visible and majestic entrance;
- Modernisation and requalification of the building (technical and thermal);
- Adaptation to public expectations: generous reception areas and services;
- Enhancement of the Place Yves Klein;
- Inclusive tour, i.e. fully accessible for all PRMs.
The renovation work will require, from the second half of 2023, the moving of the collections and their storage in a space corresponding to the conditions imposed for the “Musée de France*”, the moving of the teams, and the programming of an off-site offer.

Did you know that?
Since 2003, the MAMAC has been a “Musée de France”.
Thus, a “Musée de France” is considered to be “any permanent collection composed of goods whose conservation and presentation are of public interest and organised for the knowledge, education, and enjoyment of the public” (Art. L. 410-1.)
The museum that owns such a collection must meet 5 specific criteria to obtain this designation:
- The commitment to the missions: to conserve, restore, study, and enrich the collections; to make them accessible to the public; to implement educational and dissemination actions; to contribute to the progress and dissemination of research (Art. L. 441-2.) ;
- Be directed by a scientific staff from the local or national cultural sector (curator or conservation officer);
- Have an educational service;
- Maintain an up-to-date inventory of its collections;
- Draw up a scientific and cultural project (PSC) that sets out its main orientations.
