Le patrimoine, les édifices

L’origine du nom de Levens proviendrait du nom de la tribu ligure des Leponti, devenu Leventi à l’époque romaine ; le radical celto-ligure lev signifiant terrain en pente. Il s’agit en effet d’un habitat fortifié dont le château domine le village actuel.

Interprétation du paysage :

Les marqueurs forts du paysage se retrouvent sur ce village ; un site surélevé, un habitat groupé, des maisons étroites à plusieurs étages, des murs en pierres recouvertes d’un enduit ocre, des toits aux tuiles rondes, des passages voutés, des ruelles et de vieux porches, des fontaines. A l’extérieur, des restanques en pierres sèches pour les cultures vivrières et les oliviers que l’on distingue sur le plateau de l’Albarée, les collines recouvertes par la forêt complètent le tableau.

La commune s’est agrandie en plusieurs étapes et des hameaux se sont développés depuis le 18ème siècle : les Traverses, Sainte-Claire, Saint Antoine de Siga, où vous passerez pour rejoindre Saint-Blaise, et Plan du Var que vous apercevez depuis La Roquette sur Var.

Ce point culminant permet d’apercevoir le mont Arpasse, mais aussi le Collet Saint André et le village de Bonson, puis les gorges de la Vésubie et l’imposant mont Vial.

Jusqu’au début du 20ème siècle, les habitants de Levens tirent l’essentiel de leur revenu de la culture de l’olivier et de l’élevage, activité limitée par la rareté de l’eau qui arrivera au village en 1875 grâce à l’acquisition d’une source puis en 1949, via le canal de la Vésubie. Les paysages restent marqués par l’oléiculture et le parcours jusqu’à Saint-Blaise finira de vous en convaincre.
