Place du Grand Jardin

Lively town centre square hosting markets, flea markets and events (Festival des Nuits du Sud)

Place du Grand Jardin owes its name to the Villeneuve garden, which extended from their home into the countryside. The column in the square is the ‘left half’ of an offering made by the people of Marseilles at the beginning of the 3rd century. The dedication ‘to the March of Venice, the Republic of the Massaliotes, by the care of Julius Honoratus, Procurator of Augustus and Prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes’, was engraved by starting each line on this column and continuing it on the other ‘half’, i.e. on the other column that is now Place Godeau.
