As part of the Duchy of Savoy, a state that has been open to the Italian peninsula for centuries, Nice is one of the few French cities to boast a consistent, homogeneous Baroque heritage.
This religious and civil heritage is concentrated mainly in Old Nice. Its construction, a veritable stylistic revolution that spanned more than a century and a half (1642 - 1790), was so radical that it obliterated all previous architectural evidence.
