Distill your own gin in Nice!
Le Vadrouilleur, a distillery that recently opened in Nice, offers gin-making workshops. I didn’t know this activity existed, so when the manager suggested I try it, I was immediately on board.
Théo welcomed me to his distillery in the Port District. It consists of a shop that sells in-house produced spirits made with local ingredients and a bright back room with small copper stills and all the necessary equipment to make gin.
He began with a presentation on the origins of this alcohol and also explained all the stages of distillation; it was really interesting to learn about the process of this very special and meticulous art.
He explained that gin must be made with a neutral alcohol base and that I could flavor it by selecting a few aromas from the thirty available in his workshop.
Like a “professional,” I selected a variety of plants and fruits to give my gin a unique flavor, following Théo’s recommended proportions. Then, I placed my ingredients in the still basket for distillation.
A few steps later, I poured my precious concoction, made to my taste, into a personalized bottle with a label I had created on the spot.
I ended this experience on a high note with a gin tasting!
This workshop was absolutely captivating, and as a bonus, I left with my own 50 ml bottle of homemade gin.
I highly recommend this unique activity, which you can do alone, with a partner, or with a group of friends!
