Blockhaus de la Pointe des 3 Communes

The highest point in the fortified sector bordering the Alpes Maritimes, the Pointe des 3 communes blockhouse was defended by the Germans until 1945. Its liberation was one of the last victories of the 1st DFL on French territory.

A natural fortress, the Authion massif is a strategic zone where numerous military constructions, forts, redoubts and casemates have been erected since the 19th century. Among the blockhouses, the Pointe des Trois Commune blockhouse stands at 2080'm, on the border between the communes of Breil-sur-Roya, Saorge and La Bollène-Vésubie. Built in 1898-1899, it was the subject of a new project in 1929 to reinforce the defense of this border region.
In the early spring of 1945, the fortified Authion line was still under German infantry attack. It was not until April 12, 1945, that the army captured the Trois-Communes redoubt. The perilous intervention of soldiers attached to the French units of the 1st Division Française Libre (DFL) was decisive. And on April 24, 1945, the entire German front collapsed.
