Fortifications of the Authion Massif

A group of peaks dominating the coastline, culminating at 2,080 m., the Authion massif is an imposing fortified ensemble, a witness to the past and the scene of numerous confrontations.

In 1860, the incorporation of the County of Nice into France gave the Authion, which runs along the new border between Italy and France, a strategic position.

Two forts were built at La Forca and Les Milles Fourches in 1887, modelled on the artillery-based defensive system put in place by General Séré de Rivières. In 1899, a third stone and reinforced concrete structure was completed on the Pointe des Trois-Communes. The Redoubt position lies at the junction of the three communes of La Bollène-Vésubie, Breil-sur-Roya and Saorge.

Barracks were built to house troops maneuvering in the high country, between the Cabanes-Vieilles camp, Turini, Tête de l'Authion and Plan-Caval. The Peïra-Cava barracks, built in 1883, were permanently occupied until 1940.
