The GR 5 or Sentier Européen de Grande Randonnée E2 links the North Sea with the Mediterranean Sea.
Over 1,500 km. in length, it begins in Rotterdam in the Netherlands and passes through Belgium, Luxembourg and Switzerland to end in Nice, in France. Travelling along this route in the Alpes Maritimes means in just a few days you pass the famous peaks of the Mercantour National Park, the habitat of ibex and chamois, with the olive groves of the hills around Nice contrasting with the backdrop of the Mediterranean sea. It's also a chance to discover how the diversity of landscapes and lifestyles forged the identity of a country, that of the ancient Comté de Nice. The route can be finished in 10-11 days depending on the length of stopovers.
